Calan at Christmas concert at Acapela Pentyrch
Here’s a quick look back at Calan’s annual bash at Acapela Pentyrch. We called by Radyr Station Rd for the Christmas Tree lighting festivities on the way up the hill to Pentyrch. And by the time we were parking by the old chapel, flakes of snow were dusting the road, adding to the Christmas anticipation.
There’s a new wave of Welsh folk happening right now. Jamie Smith’s Mabon and Calan are leading the way, with young bands like Plu and Morfa gaining more support.
Acapela was packed. The band took to the tiny stage and treated the audience to a three-part unaccompanied Welsh Plygain carol. They then blasted off with dervishly high-speed jigs and reels. This band is tight.
They’re not afraid to experiment: live father (Huw) and daughter (Bethan) clogs-off contest; a tune dedicated to cheese and a fantastic interpretation of Pembrokeshire Canu Pwnc with fifths harmonies really well sung.
It was good to say hello again to Hywel, the chapel/studio’s owner who was doubling up as sound engineer.
The Butty Bach beer on draught at the bar was spectacular.
What a great night. Diolch Hywel a Calan!
